On your adventure through the game you have to finish a variety of quests, e.g. hunting down an undead rogue who was formerly captain of the rogue encampment, kill a special monster, etc. The collected experience points you gain with quests and killing monsters makes your character more powerful. When a certain amount of xp is reached you gain a level. As you get to higher levels, it takes longer to reach the next level. With every level up you receive five attribute points, which you can divide between Strength, Dexterity, Vitality and Energy.

What makes the game so much fun are the items. Diablo 2 items come in many types: armor, weapons, jewels, gems, runes, runewords and charms.
